Kabbalat Torah

Kabbalat Torah (Confirmation) was instituted about 200 years ago in Germany. The first such ceremony was held in America in 1846. Many times in our lives we are given the opportunity to reflect on our beliefs and our history and thereby reaffirm our faith. One such time is Bar/Bat Mitzvah at age 13. Kabbalat Torah occurs at a time when young adults are beginning to make life decisions. What better time to reflect on the values that Judaism teaches!

The Kabbalat Torah Class is taught at the Community Jewish High School which is held in the Temple Emanu-El Library on Tuesdays from 7-8 PM. All students planning to participate must enroll in another class during the second hour, from 8-9 PM. They are free to choose whichever class they wish during the second hour, however, they must attend that class throughout the year. Another requirement of this program is attendance at Friday or Saturday Shabbat services ten (10) times during the year.

Tuition for the class is paid directly to the Community Jewish High School. There is also a Kabbalat Torah fee, which covers all aspects of the Kabbalat Torah service and event. That fee is $550 per student. The books used in the class are: “Every Person’s Guide to Judaism,” and “To Life!” by Harold Kushner.
